Unit 8: Wildlife conservation — unless · as long as · in case

Dùng đúng unless (= if … not), as long as / provided that (miễn là), in case (phòng khi), không đặt will vào mệnh đề điều kiện, và làm quen bốn dạng câu của đề tốt nghiệp qua chủ đề bảo tồn động vật hoang dã.

⚡ Nhớ nhanh

  • 1unless = if … not. Sau unless động từ để khẳng định: Unless we act now, the species will vanish.
  • 2as long as / provided (that) / on condition that = miễn là, với điều kiện là.
  • 3in case = phòng khi: làm từ trước để phòng. Take a map in case you get lost.
  • 4Mọi mệnh đề điều kiện đều cấm will: ~~unless it will rain~~ ⇒ unless it rains.
  • 5So sánh bằng: as + tính từ nguyên dạng + as; gấp mấy lần: twice as large as.
  • 6Thói quen chống sai: sau unless không thêm not; gặp chuyện chuẩn bị trước thì nghĩ ngay tới in case, không phải if.

Đọc thành: If we don’t act now, the species will vanish. Chữ not đã nằm sẵn trong unless.

Nhớ bốn điều

  • ✦unless thay cho cả cụm if … not: If we don’t reduce hunting ⇒ Unless we reduce hunting.
  • ✦Sau unless không thêm not: ~~Unless we don’t stop~~ ⇒ Unless we stop.
  • ✦Mệnh đề unless dùng hiện tại đơn, không will: Unless the ban is enforced, poaching will continue.
  • ✦unless đứng giữa câu thì không cần phẩy: The species will vanish unless we act now.

Mệnh đề so sánh as … as

  • ✦Giữa hai chữ as là tính từ nguyên dạng: The new reserve is as large as the old one.
  • ✦Gấp mấy lần: twice / three times + as … as: The sanctuary is twice as large as the old one.

  1. 1 Hỏi: việc ở vế chính làm trước để phòng, hay làm sau khi điều kia xảy ra?
  2. 2 Làm trước, chuẩn bị sẵn ⇒ in case.
  3. 3 Làm khi điều kia đã xảy ra ⇒ if. Nêu điều kiện phải giữ ⇒ as long as / provided that.
  4. 4 Đọc lại: mệnh đề sau từ nối ở hiện tại, không will ✓

Soi một đoạn văn · bấm chú giải để chỉ sáng một loại

Cuc Phuong National Park is home to many endangered animals, such as langurs and pangolins.

Visitors may walk in the forest as long as they stay on the paths.

However, unless hunting stops, these species may die out.

That is why rangers always carry radios in case they meet poachers.

they = visitors · these species = langurs and pangolins. Rangers mang bộ đàm từ trước, không phải đợi gặp kẻ săn trộm mới mang.

Đọc như người ra đề

  • ✦Đề hay hỏi "The word they refers to …": thay từng danh từ số nhiều đứng trước vào xem cái nào hợp nghĩa.
  • ✦However = đổi chiều · That is why / As a result = kết quả · First / Then = thứ tự. Đây là chìa khoá của dạng sắp xếp câu.
  • ✦Gặp unless thì đọc lại thành if … not. Câu "Even if hunting stops, these species will die out" là SAI so với đoạn trên.

Dạng 4 · Đọc hiểu

In 1992, scientists working in Vu Quang, a forest in Ha Tinh province, found a strange skull with two long, straight horns in a hunter’s house. It belonged to an animal that had never been described before: the saola. The discovery was so surprising that newspapers around the world called it the “Asian unicorn”. Since then, the saola has become one of the rarest mammals on Earth. It has been photographed in the wild only a few times, and no scientist has ever seen one there. Nobody knows exactly how many are left. The biggest threat is not hunters looking for saolas, but snares: simple wire traps set for other animals. Rangers have removed hundreds of thousands of snares from the forests of Viet Nam and Laos. However, new ones appear every week. Conservationists warn that the saola will become extinct unless snares are removed faster than they are set. Some also hope to start a breeding programme, provided that a few animals can be found and caught safely. They are racing against time.
